The morning light streamed into the grand mansion, casting long shadows across the polished hardwood floors. Clara adjusted her dress as she walked through the heavy wooden doors of her husband's family home. Her heart pounded heavily inside her chest because she knew today was going to be a very difficult day for everyone.
Julian had gone to park the dark luxury car out front while Clara stepped inside first to find his stepmother, Evelyn. Evelyn had controlled the family fortune ever since Julian's father passed away two years ago. Every room in the massive house felt cold and empty, despite the expensive art hanging on every wall.
Clara carried a thick brown folder close to her chest as she walked toward the grand staircase. Inside that folder were legal papers regarding the trust fund left by Julian's late father. For months, Evelyn had claimed the money was gone due to bad investments in the stock market.
Evelyn: What are you doing in my house so early, Clara?
Clara: I found the real bank statements, Evelyn. You lied to Julian.
Evelyn: You need to leave right now before I call security on you.
Clara: You took his inheritance and put it into your private accounts!
Evelyn stood at the top of the balcony, her eyes narrowing into cold slits as she stared down at Clara. Her short grey hair was perfectly styled, and her dark designer suit made her look severe and heartless. She did not look like a grieving widow; she looked like a ruthless woman protectively guarding stolen wealth.
Clara began climbing the wide marble steps, holding the banister tightly because she was six months pregnant with her first child. Her doctor had told her to be careful with stairs, but she needed to confront Evelyn face to face. The truth about the family business could no longer be hidden under a rug.
Clara: The lawyer said this will end in a massive lawsuit against you.
Evelyn: You are an outsider who married my stepson for his name.
Clara: I love Julian, and I am protecting our baby's future!
Evelyn: Give me those documents right now, Clara!
Evelyn stepped forward aggressively, reaching her manicured hand out toward the brown folder in Clara's arms. Clara backed up against the balcony railing at the top of the second floor landing. Below them, the bright mansion foyer stretched out with a large American flag hanging proudly on the wall.
The tension between the two women filled the upper hallway like thick smoke before a fire. Clara could hear her own rapid breathing echoing against the tall ceilings of the empty mansion. She squeezed the papers tighter, refusing to back down from the cold woman who had controlled Julian for years.
Clara: Don't touch me! Julian is coming inside right now.
Evelyn: He won't believe a single word that comes out of your mouth!
Clara: He will believe the signed bank records in these files!
Evelyn: Give them to me!
Evelyn lunged forward with sudden force, shoving her hands against Clara's shoulders without warning. Clara lost her footing on the slick marble floor at the very edge of the balcony railing. Her heel slipped, and her body tipped backward into the open air above the grand foyer.
A sudden gasp escaped Clara's throat as the folder slipped from her hands. White papers scattered into the bright air like falling snow as she tumbled backward over the edge. She screamed out in pure terror as gravity pulled her downward toward the hard polished floor below.
