Officer Miller stood at attention beside Charlotte as two older gentlemen in dark suits walked over from the main stage. One of them was Mr. Harrison, the senior trustee of the maritime foundation and a close friend of Charlotte's late father. Mr. Harrison looked at Evelyn and Victoria, who were slowly pushing themselves up from the floor with embarrassed faces. Their hair was messy, and their grand dresses looked ridiculous as they tried to regain their dignity in front of the city's highest socialites.
Mr. Harrison: Evelyn, I suggest you stay right where you are. We have been waiting for Charlotte to arrive all evening.
Evelyn: Mr. Harrison, this is a family matter! My stepdaughter stole private records from my house!
Mr. Harrison: She did not steal anything. Those records belong to the public trust established by her father ten years ago.
Charlotte: My father left fifty percent of the shipping company to the Navy Veterans Assistance Fund, and the other half in a legal trust for my education and care.
Victoria: That trust fund was dissolved after Dad died! You have nothing left!
Charlotte: It was never dissolved. You and Evelyn forged his signature on the transfer deed weeks after he passed away in the hospital.
The crowd let out a shocked wave of muttering. Evelyn's face turned completely pale, white as a sheet. She tried to speak, but her mouth opened and closed without making any sound. Mr. Harrison pulled a set of legal papers from his own briefcase and held them up for everyone to see. He looked at the guests and then back down at the two women standing in shame before him.
Mr. Harrison: We had the signatures audited by federal investigators three days ago. The court has already frozen all of your bank accounts, Evelyn.
Evelyn: You cannot do this to me! I built this family's reputation in this city!
Officer Miller: Ma'am, you built your reputation on fraud and theft. And physically assaulting a federal guest of honor in public carries immediate consequences.
Charlotte stood quietly beside Officer Miller, watching her stepmother and stepsister fall apart in real time. For two long years, she had carried the burden of being kicked out of her own family home, forced to work late nights just to pay rent, while Evelyn lived in luxury on stolen wealth. But she had never lost her temper, never sought petty revenge, and never gave up on finding the legal proof her father had left behind. Now, standing in the middle of the grandest room in the city, the truth had finally come out into the light.
