The Unwanted Guest Walks In

The grand hotel ballroom was filled with bright gold lights, crystal chandeliers, and dozens of wealthy guests in dark tuxedos and long silk dresses. Waiters carried silver trays filled with expensive drinks while soft classical music played in the background. In the middle of this fancy crowd stood Charlotte Vail. She was wearing a quiet royal blue blazer, dark jeans, and carrying a simple canvas tote bag over her shoulder. Her simple clothes stood out immediately against the sea of designer gowns and tailored suits. She looked around the room calmly, looking for one specific face in the crowd. She had come here tonight not to make trouble, but to hand over important legal papers regarding her late father's estate. Her stepmother, Evelyn, and her stepsister, Victoria, had taken over the family business and left Charlotte with nothing after her father passed away two years ago. They had locked her out of the family mansion, cut off her college trust fund, and left her to survive on her own with only a small apartment and a part-time job.

Charlotte took a slow breath, holding her tote bag tightly. She knew she was taking a big risk by entering the gala, but her lawyer had told her that the Navy foundation was taking over her father's old maritime company tonight. If she did not present the original deed before midnight, Evelyn would sell off the entire business to private investors and hide the money in offshore accounts. Charlotte walked slowly across the shiny marble floor, ignoring the cold stares from the wealthy people standing nearby. People whispered behind their hands as she passed by. They looked at her jeans and her simple tote bag with disgust. But Charlotte kept her head up. She had worked hard for two years to rebuild her life, and she was not going to let their silent judgment stop her from doing what was right for her father's memory.

As she walked deeper into the main hall, a tall woman in a bright scarlet red dress stepped directly into her path. It was Victoria, her stepsister. Victoria was holding a costly red Gucci handbag, and her dark eyes were filled with anger as she stared down at Charlotte. Behind her walked Evelyn, wearing a long silver dress and dripping in diamond jewelry. The two women stopped right in front of Charlotte, blocking her from moving toward the front stage where the naval officers were gathering.

Victoria: What are you doing here, Charlotte? You look like you got lost on your way to a grocery store.

Charlotte: I am here to deliver documents regarding my father's will and the company transfer.

Evelyn: Your father left everything to me in his final will. You have no rights here, child.

Charlotte: That was not his true will, Evelyn, and you know it. The original paperwork belongs to the trust fund.

Victoria: Shut your mouth! You do not belong in a place like this with real people of status!

Victoria stepped closer, her red dress rustling as she raised her chin arrogantly. The nearby guests stopped talking and turned their heads to watch the drama unfold near the center of the hall.
