Julian stood up slowly from the carpet, his chest heaving as anger washed over his face. He walked over to the grand desk and began picking up the scattered legal papers that Maria had tried to save moments earlier. As he flipped through the white pages, his eyes scanned the formal legal text written in sharp black ink. It was not a simple health proxy or care plan as Evelyn had claimed over the phone weeks ago. It was a complete property transfer document, stripping Clara of her fifty percent share in her father’s multi-million dollar real estate company, her trust fund, and the title to the family mansion, transferring every single asset directly into Evelyn’s personal bank accounts.
Julian: You drafted a complete forfeiture of her rights? While she was lying in a hospital bed with a broken back?
Evelyn: It was for the good of the business! She is a sick girl who cannot run a corporation, Julian!
Julian: Father left half of everything to her because it belonged to her mother's family line! You had no legal right to touch this trust fund!
Evelyn: I am his wife! I gave fifteen years of my life to that man, and he left half his empire to a fragile girl who can barely walk!
Clara: My father knew you were spending all his money on bad investments in offshore accounts, Evelyn. He told me before he died.
Evelyn's face turned completely red with rage. She realized her carefully constructed plan was falling apart right before her eyes. For six months, she had been hiding massive financial losses from the company board, spending millions of dollars on luxury yachts and failed stock trades in South America. If she did not get full control of Clara's inheritance by the end of the month, the bank would foreclose on the mansion and expose her secret debt to the entire world. That was why she had been feeding Clara the sedatives, trying to break her spirit until she would sign anything put in front of her.
Evelyn: You listen to me, Julian! If you don't help me sign these papers today, we will both be ruined! The family business owes millions to foreign investors!
Julian: I don't care about the business if it means committing a crime against my own sister!
Evelyn: She is not your real sister! She is just a child from your father's first marriage! She means nothing to our bloodline!
Julian: She is more of a family to me than you have ever been, Mother. You have become a monster driven by greed.
Maria helped Clara sit up against the base of the desk, wrapping a warm woolen shawl around her cold shoulders. Clara looked at Julian with tears of gratitude filling her eyes. She had been terrified that Julian would take his mother's side, but seeing him stand between her and Evelyn gave her the strength she needed to finally speak the entire truth out loud in front of everyone.
Clara: The car accident wasn't an accident either, Julian. Someone cut the brake lines on dad's sedan before we drove down the mountain road.
Julian: What did you just say, Clara?! Are you absolutely sure about the brakes?
Clara: The mechanic at the shop told me the brake lines were cleanly cut with wire shears... but Evelyn paid him off to stay quiet!
