The Golden Dress And Lies

The morning sun shone brightly through the tall arched windows of the grand lakeside mansion. Down in the spacious living room, little baby Maya sat in her gray stroller with soft safety straps fastened securely around her small waist. She was laughing hysterically, her cute tiny hands waving in the air as she giggled at the colorful plush toys hanging from the canopy. Her innocent laughter echoed off the marble walls, bringing a warm feeling to the large, quiet house. Everyday life in the big house seemed peaceful on the surface, but underneath the polished surfaces, terrible secrets were waiting to tear everything apart. Elena, the dedicated young maid who had worked for the family for three years, wiped down the mahogany railing nearby. She kept a watchful eye on baby Maya at all times, loving the child like her own little sister.

Mark had built a massive real estate empire over two decades, accumulating a massive fortune, a luxury estate, and a valuable family trust fund meant for his children. After losing his first wife to illness three years ago, he had recently remarried Clara, a younger woman who loved high fashion, gold sequined dresses, and expensive jewelry. Clara spoke with a sweet tone whenever Mark was in the room, but her eyes turned cold the moment he turned his back. She viewed little baby Maya and Mark's teenage daughter, Lily, as obstacles standing between her and a full claim to the family estate. Mark believed Clara was a loving stepmother who wanted nothing more than a peaceful home, completely unaware of the dark plans forming in her mind.

On this particular afternoon, Mark was working late in his private office on the second floor, finishing important documents regarding his company's latest expansion. Clara walked into the main hallway wearing a striking gold sequined dress that shimmered brightly under the crystal chandelier overhead. She clicked her high heels across the polished floor, heading straight toward the gray stroller where baby Maya was sleeping peacefully. Elena watched from the dining room corner, feeling an uneasy knot form in her stomach. Clara had never shown genuine affection toward baby Maya, yet today she leaned over the stroller with a strange smile on her face. Elena set her cleaning cloth down quietly and took a slow step closer to keep watch.

Clara: She is so loud today. A baby shouldn't be making so much noise in my house.

Elena: She is just happy, ma'am. I can take her out to the garden if she is bothering you.

Clara: I didn't ask for your advice, Elena. I know how to manage this house far better than a maid.

Elena kept her head down, but her gaze stayed fixed on Clara's swift movements. Clara unlocked the wheels of the gray stroller and began wheeling it toward the edge of the grand marble staircase. The stairs were steep and dangerous, made of solid white stone that led all the way down to the hard foyer floor. Elena's heart started pounding against her ribs as she realized how close the stroller was to the drop-off point. Clara turned her body slightly, placing her hand on the handle with an uncomfortable amount of pressure, her expression shifting into something dark and calculated.

Elena: Ma'am, please step back from the stairs. That is not safe for the baby.

Clara: Mind your own business and get back to your duties immediately.

Elena knew that crossing Clara could cost her the job she desperately needed to support her own elderly mother, but she could not stand by and let a baby be placed in danger. She picked up her pace, moving quickly across the smooth floor as Clara pushed the stroller dangerously close to the very top step of the grand staircase.
