The Maid Who Saved Baby

The bright golden sunlight poured through the high arched glass windows of the grand mansion hall, reflecting off the polished white marble floors like pure ice. Elena adjusted her grey maid uniform, pulling her small cotton apron neat and straight before picking up her dusting rag. She had worked inside the vast estate of the Vance family for nearly three full years now, serving as both house maid and primary nanny for baby Clara. The quiet infant was only eight months old, a sweet little girl with bright blue eyes who spent her afternoons resting peacefully inside her pink stroller in the main foyer.

Elena loved the little baby deeply, treating her with all the gentle care and soft affection a real mother would give. Her employer, Adrian Vance, was a powerful business leader who ran a multi-million dollar logistics firm in the city. Adrian was often busy in his formal home office, reading over court documents, managing a big trust fund, and securing his massive estate after his first wife had passed away two years ago. To protect his growing family wealth and ensure his children were safe, Adrian had hired Elena on a generous salary. Elena appreciated the honest work because the money helped support her own aging parents living in a small apartment nearby.

However, the smooth peace inside the grand house had changed completely four months ago when Adrian married his new bride, Victoria. Victoria was twenty-eight years old, accustomed to high society, charity galas, and wearing bright silk designer clothes around the giant foyer. From her very first day inside the mansion, Victoria showed extreme coldness toward little Clara and Adrian's twelve-year-old daughter, Sarah. Victoria wanted complete control over the family business, the full inheritance, and the dark wood executive boardroom meetings that Adrian held at home. She viewed the small baby girl as a giant obstacle to her dream of securing the entire estate for herself in their upcoming legal will revisions.

On this clear Tuesday afternoon, Elena was wiping down the tall wooden railing near the base of the grand marble staircase. The stairs curved gracefully up to the second floor balcony, looking down onto the main hall where a large American flag hung proudly beside the formal entrance. Baby Clara was sleeping soundly inside her heavy stroller near the landing up top. Elena smiled softly as she heard the tiny baby make a quiet, happy sound in her sleep. But then, heavy high-heeled shoes clicked sharply along the polished floorboards of the upper hallway, breaking the quiet afternoon silence.

Elena looked up and saw Victoria standing at the top of the marble stairs, wearing a bright gold dress that shone in the sunlight. Victoria stared down at Elena with a cold, narrow look in her eyes, her red lips set in a flat line. Victoria walked slowly toward the pink baby stroller, her gloved hand resting lightly on the silver handle. Elena stopped wiping the wooden railing, feeling a sudden strange knot form deep inside her stomach as she watched the stepmother's quiet movements. Victoria did not smile or call out to the nanny like she usually did when she wanted iced tea.

Instead, Victoria looked over her shoulder toward the closed double doors of Adrian's private home office. Seeing that no one was watching from the main floor, Victoria put both hands firmly against the back of the stroller. With a quick, powerful shove, she intentionally pushed the heavy baby stroller over the top edge of the grand marble staircase. The heavy rubber wheels clicked loudly as the carriage tipped forward over the first stone step, speeding down toward the hard marble floor far below.
