The Floor She Was Forced To Clean

The bright Texas sun poured through the massive double-height windows of the Dallas mansion. Sunlight reflected off the polished white marble floor of the grand foyer, making every tiny speck of dirt visible. The house was dead quiet, except for the harsh, repetitive sound of a coarse brush scraping against tile. Sixty-year-old Martha was down on her hands and knees. Her knees throbbed with a dull, constant ache that ran all the way up her back. Her hands, worn rough from three decades of hard labor in this very home, were soaked in bucket water that had turned a muddy grey. Drops of sweat trickled down her forehead, mixing with the silent tears running down her wrinkled cheeks. She was weak, exhausted, and humiliated.

Standing just a few feet away was Margarethe Vance. She wore a tailored red silk dress that practically glowed against the white walls. Her blonde hair was styled to perfection, and her gold jewelry clinked softly every time she shifted her weight. Margarethe had married into the Vance family only two years ago, right before old Mr. Arthur Vance passed away. Since that day, she had treated the entire household staff like lower-class servants rather than human beings. She took special pleasure in picking on Martha, who had been Arthur's most trusted housekeeper for over thirty years. Margarethe looked down her thin nose at Martha with absolute disgust, resting one hand on her hip while holding a half-empty glass of iced tea in the other.

"You missed a spot right by the bottom stair, Martha," Margarethe said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness that hid a vicious bite. "I can still see water marks near the baseboard. My guests are arriving for the charity luncheon in two hours. Do you want this whole house looking cheap? Scrub it again, and put some actual effort into it this time. If I see a single streak when I walk back out here, I will deduct another hundred dollars from your weekly paycheck."

Martha squeezed her eyes shut and tried to suppress a sob. "Please, Mrs. Vance," Martha whispered, her voice cracking under the emotional strain. "I have scrubbed this foyer three times already today. My arthritis is acting up really bad. I can barely feel my fingers, and my knees are bleeding through my uniform fabric. Can I please just take a ten-minute break to rest? I promise I will finish everything before the guests arrive."

Margarethe gasped softly, taking a slow step forward in her designer high heels. The sharp click of her red bottoms echoed against the stone floor like small gunshots. "Did I give you permission to speak back to me?" Margarethe asked, her tone turning ice-cold. "You are paid to clean, not to complain. Your predecessor was fired for laziness, and if you keep talking, you will join her on the street without a single cent of severance pay."

Just then, a younger maid named Sarah ran out from the kitchen hallway. Sarah was in her early twenties, wearing a simple grey maid uniform. She had only worked at the Vance estate for six months, but Martha had treated her like a mother from her very first day. Seeing Martha crying on the cold floor was too much for Sarah to stand. Throwing caution to the wind, Sarah rushed over and knelt beside Martha, placing a protective arm around the elderly woman's trembling shoulders.

"Please stop this, Mrs. Vance!" Sarah pleaded, tears welling up in her own eyes as she pulled Martha close. "She is in terrible physical pain! You cannot treat a human being like this. Mr. Arthur would never have allowed anyone to treat Martha with such cruelty. She is like family to this house!"

Margarethe let out a short, harsh laugh that filled the open foyer. "Arthur is dead, little girl," she snickered, swirling her iced tea. "I run this estate now. And if you don't unhand her right this second, you can pack your bags and leave right alongside her."

Martha sobbed heavily, clutching Sarah's apron. "Please, Sarah, don't get yourself fired for my sake," Martha whimpered. "I will just clean it. I will do whatever she wants." But before Martha could press the brush back against the hard stone, the heavy front double doors of the mansion burst open with a loud thud.
