Two days later, the family courtroom in downtown Chicago was packed with reporters and news cameras. The story of the wealthy socialite caught on high-definition video abusing her infant stepson had made national headlines overnight. Victoria sat at the defense table dressed in a plain orange county jail jumpsuit, her hair unwashed and her hands cuffed at her waist.
Her expensive defense attorney tried to argue for a quick release on bail, claiming his client suffered from sudden emotional stress and needed private treatment at a luxury medical center.
Defense Lawyer: Your Honor, my client has no prior criminal record. We ask for a reasonable bail settlement so she can seek private help at home.
Judge Miller: Counsel, I have reviewed the high-definition security footage provided by the prosecution. I saw your client deliberately bite a helpless six-month-old child out of sheer malice.
The judge looked over her glasses at Victoria, her voice stern and unyielding.
Judge Miller: Furthermore, Mr. Sterling's legal team has filed for an immediate annulment based on fraud and felony child abuse, alongside a complete forfeiture of any rights to marital property, alimony, or trust fund access under the prenup agreement.
Victoria began to weep loudly, her shoulders shaking as her attorney leaned in to whisper bad news into her ear.
Judge Miller: Bail is denied completely. The defendant will remain in custody pending her criminal trial for felony child endangerment and aggravated assault. Court is adjourned.
The gavel slammed down hard, sounding like the final door closing on Victoria's comfortable life. Ethan sat in the front row of the gallery, holding Martha's shoulder gently as they watched the guards lead Victoria away through the side door to face her long sentence behind bars.
Outside the courthouse steps, bright sun beat down on the crowd of reporters waiting for a statement. Ethan stood before the microphones with Martha standing proudly by his side, holding little Leo, whose hand was now wrapped in a clean, soft white bandage.
Ethan: Today justice was served for my son. But more importantly, today showed us who true family really is.
He turned to Martha and took her hand in front of all the flashing cameras.
Ethan: Martha risked her own safety and livelihood to protect my child when no one else was there. As of today, Martha is no longer our housemaid. She is the head guardian of our family estate, with a permanent trust fund set up for her and her children for the rest of her life.
Martha wiped a tear from her eye, smiling down at baby Leo, who reached out his uninjured hand to grab her thumb. The long nightmare was finally over, and true love and protection had won inside their home.
